On February 14th members of Valley Stream South’s “Southern Bell” attended a field trip to Adelphi University. During this trip students from various schools had the opportunity to experience a glimpse of college life as well as hearing the personal experiences of Adelphi students that continued in their love for journalism.  

Press Day at Adelphi is a news event that gives high school students a chance to participate in discussions with fellow students interested in journalism and those who have career in it whether it be social media marketing or television news. During the event those in attendance first listened to a panel discussion between adults who specialize in different branches of journalism. This was followed by two sessions of workshops where students could listen to each panel member, alongside Adelphi students speak on their specialties in depth. After lunch, the Quill Awards were presented. Prior to press day, the schools in attendance had the chance to nominate members of their newspaper for different categories. The categories ranged from best opinion piece to best visual, including honorable mentions.  

Overall Press Day was an amazing opportunity for all students that enjoy writing and plan to have a future in it. They were able to ask questions on how to improve their own talents and how to further a career in Journalism. As for South’s students interested in the joy of storytelling, it is never too late to join the Southern Bell.
